After many backwards and forwards messages, I went to Lafayette to see Jess, who worked at CENMAC many years ago. 11 years ago to be precise, as her oldest son (just born when she came back to the States) is now 11. On the way I went to the Oakland Museum of California. Nice place, only disrupted by school visits. Ah well.
I must say though, the ticketing system for the BART transport (fast trains to outer suburbs) is very peculiar. Never mind, I got there and got back.

It’s always fun when you encounter something that’s normal to the natives, but contains leaps in deductive reasoning that are a mystery to everyone else. If that’s the state flower of California, it looks like the pretty but pervasive Welsh poppy that Mother’s gardener is trying to eradicate.

It’s the California poppy. Quite common in uk gardens as far as I know.
