Weimar

Up and away this morning back through the Thuringian forest to Weimar. Home of Bach, Goethe, Schiller, Liszt et al. Another beautifully laid out historical town with a plethora of old buildings.

This morning we went out to the Schiesshaus. Built in 1805 in the forest as the headquarters of a local shooting society. Wikipedia says it was abandoned but i would imagine the DDR had something to do with it.

The ghostly forms of the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin playing oboe and violin concertos.
Pasta ( with spinach) for lunch.
Market square in Weimar.
Him again…..
Wonderful 18C buildings
The Anna Amalia baroque library.
18C bound books.
The Schloss. As you can tell, different bits date from different times. There is a rather nice art museum inside but they also have the builders in.
Goethe and Schiller. Friends for life outside the theatre.
The headquarters of the Weimar Republic. Previously a theatre, now a museum. Interesting to know exactly what they actually stood for.
Half timbered house
The church of St Peter and St Paul, otherwise known as the town church. The altarpiece is by Lucas Cranach and shows the importance of Martin Luther to the religious life of the town. The donors on the wings are John, Duke of Saxony and his family. Bach played the organ here and two of his sons were baptised here.
Again, extensively restored. This time both after a fire in the 17C and after bombing during the Second World War.

We saw Vox Luminis doing the Magnificat and one of the cantatas by Bach. They are very good. If there is a heaven, there will have to be Bach with trumpets or I’m not going.
