Corbridge

This is a very historical town, previously on Hadrian’s Wall and half way between Hexham and Newcastle. They even have the remains of an enormous Roman bridge over the Tyne.

We had lunch at the Corbridge Larder (https://corbridgelarder.co.uk) which is a very good deli with a dog friendly cafe and a nice way with a doggie sausage. The town also has a nice range of twee (and not so twee) shops with tempting stuff.

This is the 13C Pele tower, built for the Vicar of the local church to live in. The border between England and Scotland was both extremely fluid and extremely dangerous for many hundreds of years and people continued to build castles in the area where houses were sufficient in most of the country. The vicars continued to live here until the 17C.

Gorse blooming.
The 17C bridge across the Tyne which was the only structure on the whole river to survive the flood of 1771.
And where I got all my information!

Lanercost Priory

This is an Augustinian monastery, also on Hadrian’s Wall, founded in the 12C, much damaged by various Scottish invasions and destroyed by Henry VIII’s men in the 16C. The church was spared and became the parish church. The church and cemetery continue to be used to this day. They also have a very nice tea room. Anyone spot a theme coming on?
