Last day in the USA

As I had to be out of the hotel by 11 and my plane doesn’t go until midnight, I arranged some stuff that would carefully not involve me buying any petrol! Although as I have managed to get from San Francisco to LA on one tank plus $20 worth, it would have been cheaper than a lot of other stuff.

Off to the Getty Villa. I went there 25 years ago but they’ve built a whole visitor’s centre, auditorium and cafe since then. First room I went in – Assyrian panels from the British Museum that I saw in an exhibition last year. Other temporary exhibition was of stuff from Pompeii, some of which I had also already seen , again at the BM. Ah well.

Rest of museum is nice collection of Greek and Roman stuff, displayed in building that is exact copy of the Villa dei Papiri in Pompeii. Worryingly, a lot of the stuff appears to have no provenance – where and when was it dug up etc.

Then went to Venice Beach for ice cream. Interesting mixture of Blackpool and Camden market with fewer clothes and legal marijuana.

Now at airport v v early.

  1. Mother and I saw a ‘Time Team’ special about the Sevso Hoard of Roman Silver. It had a truly dodgy provenance across several continents and it was being aimed at the Getty, until their Head of Acquisitions started digging into the supposed documentation that came with it.
