So we have arrived in the Marquesas Islands, spending the first day at Nuku Hiva. Up at the crack of dawn again, military efficiency to get us on the dock and into cars – ordered by language! No fraternising with other languages for us. Just meant that we had a guide working in one language. Drove across the island in every rentable vehicle they’ve got. Small volcanic island, very beautiful. To the cathedral and then an archeological site with greeting dancers (second lot, after the ones on the quay) and discussion about missionaries and the survival of the culture. Lunch (traditionally Polynesian) in a reconstructed village centre. Bit of crafty shopping, few scenic photos and back to the boat.

Interesting menu. Hmm – I can see that their undoubtedly tight sailing schedule might encourage a fairly regimented regime to make sure that shore visits begin and end with the right folk onboard. Do they separate the language groups onboard too – neighbouring cabins, meals, etc.? Thankyou for all these photos, particularly if the wi-fi is expensive – have fun.
