Rangiroa

Well, as I said, not a lot happened yesterday owing to us being at sea all day. We did have an interesting chat about cargo with a guy called Tino who has been on the ship since the Aranui 1 in 1984. He was in cargo for 30 years and transferred to guiding passengers 5 years ago. Images of delivering cars by rowing boat from the big ship and having to sit in it whilst the boat lurched to the land and then driving the car down two planks onto the beach. Nowadays (because we saw it) they put the car on the flat barge by crane then drive it off onto the jetty as soon as the sea puts the two things level. Still pretty hair raising and, if anyone is feeling pissed off about the cost of cars, it costs $1500 (US) to have it delivered!

In the evening we had a presentation from the passenger dance group who have been practising all week and then dances by the crew.

This morning I have been to the beach and on a glass bottomed boat to the reef. The fish head in the picture is because one of the lads on the boat got in the water and fed the fish under the boat so that we could see them. We also went to see the fishermen filleting their catch and throwing the heads and bits left over to the sharks – that come to be fed. There was also a moray eel.

Off for a massage this pm in case this past 10 days has not been relaxing enough 😎

  1. Just wanted to let you know that I’m enjoying reading your blog even if I don’t Always comment! It’s especially good now the weather here is getting so cold and gloomy – the clocks went back on Sunday (do you even know what day it is? It can be hard to keep track when you’ re in the middle of an ocean!!) Keep enjoying it all x

  2. The colours of the fish are so vibrant. The method for delivering the cars sounds hair-raising, but fun to watch if you’re not actually responsible.
