Nelson

Well this is a nice town by the sea. Apparently it fills up with students on their first trip away without mum and dad over the summer holidays. One to avoid then, then. Very popular with yachties as well. Although ‘people with boats’ seems to include half the population of New Zealand.

Herbie was determined to show us how kiwi fruit were grown so we went to this farm. He said he’d been there before but didn’t say that that had been without the farmers permission! We got thrown off!

We went sailing today. We went on a catamaran for the whole morning along the coast of the Abel Tasman National Park. Lovely. Packed lunch with 2 lots of home made cake then most of the rest of the group went off on a 4hr, 12km walk. Those of us not sure of our physical prowess got to stay behind, read books, go for a small walk locally, admire the ‘acqua packers’ hostel and wait for a water taxi. That was fun. Then we got to hang around with coffee and ice cream and wait for Herbie to come back and get the bus. This evening we have been to the restaurant next door for fresh fish. Mainly with batter.

  1. Herbie sounds like quite a character, although some of our local fruit farmers might also baulk at groups turning up uninvited…it would seem logical for them to come to some kind of arrangement with Herbie. Even if there isn’t ripe fruit to flog, I’m sure that there would be sale for a small range of kiwi-fruit themed t-shirts with vaguely obscene slogans on them.
Sorry about the batter – seems a bit of a shame if you’ve got really fresh fish on your slate.
