Fleurieu Peninsula

After a rough night pondering Boris’ various iniquities, we have been for a bit of a tour round the south west corner of South Australia. We have not been to Kangaroo Island, despite everyone’s recommendations as it has the most expensive ferry journey per kilometre in the world. You also need to be there for about 3 days to make the best of it. Maybe next time. All the beaches round here have a wide range of flies who, along with the sandflies and mosquitoes, think I am the best thing since sliced bread.

I am updating yesterday’s entry as it occurs to me that it was a bit boring. As we have continued our tour of the peninsular, I will just carry on at the bottom.

On Saturday we drove to Wirrina Cove, then Second Valley then Rapid Bay. These are all down the coast from Carrickalinga where Anne and Andy live. Rapid Bay is where some of the first settlers to South Australia arrived. They had previously been on Kangaroo Island but there was no fresh water.

Then to Cape Jervis, the south westernmost point in the peninsular and the ferry harbour for Kangaroo Island. Nice view of it though.

After that, the Talisker Silver Mine. This was set up by Cornish silver miners in the 1840s to mine silver, lead and arsenic. There isn’t much of it left but what there is is very familiar. They built it in exactly the way they would have at home.

Blow Hole Beach. I didn’t see any blow holes but I’m sure they are there. This was down a steep track where only 4 wheel drives were allowed. The flies continued to be enthusiastic.

Sunday

To a range of antique shops in Strathalbyn – with me and Anne wandering around going ‘I don’t think that’s Georgian, do you?’ Also to Anne’s mum’s house for tea with her and Anne’s sister. They all moved over here after A and A did.

More looking at seaside resorts and a tasting episode at Bleasdale Winery. Nice lunch by Lake Alexandrina which is at the mouth of the Murray River. Notice genuine 19C paddle steamer. Lovely fruit ice cream on the way back.

  1. Honestly, I didn’t not comment yesterday because it was boring – just got a bit overwhelmed by Xmas and Mother in that order and couldn’t get a moment to complete it. Anyway, I’m glad to know that your positive impressions of Antipodean ice cream continue, sympathise over the flies – as I know only too well, if biting things think you’re tasty, you’re tasty. I am slightly alarmed about this ‘aggressive’ wood they use for the wine barrels.
