Culture in Melbourne

I am enjoying the little apartment thing. They also only clean every 3 days unless you request otherwise, so no pressure to be out, clean and tidy by 10am.

This morning, to the art gallery of Victoria. Didn’t have long as had managed to get a last minute ticket for a matinee at the theatre on the way.

Then to see Chicago. Starring …. wait for it ……JASON DONOVAN. Amongst others. Bloody good production as well starring a lot of phenomenally talented people. All of whom could act , sing, dance and had legs that went up to their shoulders. https://chicagothemusical.com.au/cast/

Then to the other half of the art gallery to discuss landscape painting and particularly the importance of getting the heat right in Australia with a passing art student.

This is The Forum – now a venue for rock music but presumably previously a cinema.

Did have lunch time chat with two teachers, one of whom said she worked with a Brit who says it’s worse here than at home. Must be bad.

  1. You look to have had a thoroughly civilised day. That’s a handsome piece of stained glass, which is either very old or a good C19 evocation of medieval glass – and the statue out front is a lot of fun, reminds me of one of Desperate Dan in Dundee, but probably has a more elevated origin. One of the slightly unexpected things I discovered in the course of research was the very regular ‘trade’ in performers of all sorts between the UK and Oz during the C19 – can’t speak for the school system in general, but their stage academies are very well thought of. I love last minute matinees – saw Ewan Macgregor in Guys and Dolls on a wet Wednesday afternoon and he was the only one of a very respectable cast who worked the whole theatre, eye-balling us up in the Gods.

  2. Enjoying reading your blog Ann and trying to take it all in!
On the radio this morning it said the Australian Prime Minister had cut short his holiday in Hawaii with his family to focus on the bush fires!
He said he accepted the criticism of not coming back earlier.
I will be able to read your blog at mum’s but am not able to send a reply on my iPhone so as I’m heading up to Peterborough today it’s time to wish you a Happy Christmas and lots of adventures in 2020.
    Take care now

  3. I’m not surprised you are enjoying the ‘little apartment thing’. Lovely to have your own space for awhile and what a nice day you’ve had well away from the hype of Christmas.
I haven’t seen Jason Donovan on stage, only in neighbours and in strictly!
We hear about the fires and soaring temperatures at your end. Would that we could send over some of our rain.
Happy Christmas and a very happy and healthy 2020.
We’re off to see Star Wars this evening.

  4. That large sculpture is by KAWS, (real name Brian Donnelly) an American street artist who work has become very popular in recent years and sells for huge prices. A slightly crass simplification would be to say he is New Jersey’s own Banksy. I’m glad you thought he was deserving of a picture.
This sounds like a very busy day of culture.
