Last days of Northumberland

Many days have passed in leisurely older lady vacations – tea shops, random tv programmes and historic sites.

At the beach at Alnmouth. Hours of fun with the dog.

Brinkburn Priory. A mediaeval monastery , dissolved in the 16C and re-consecrated in the 19C. Alongside, there is a Manor House built in the early 19C but subsequently abandoned.

Wonderful acoustics.
And original floor tiles.
This is the Regency house, abandoned alongside the priory.
Priory and house.

In the Ingram Valley on the moors towards the Scottish border. This is the River Breamish.

How many views would you like?
This is the butchers in Rothbury. The sausages were lovely.

Vindolanda. The best preserved Roman fort on Hadrian’s wall. Because of the ongoing wars between England and Scotland, it remained undeveloped until archeological investigations started in the early 19C. Because of the environment, organic materials such as wood and leather have survived. The major historical event was the discovery of letters written on thin sheets of wood. The record of the regiments posted to Vindolanda. For some of them, from Southern Europe, the culture shock must have been incredible.
Remains of a horse harness with a replica.
Roman boxing gloves.
Samian ware bowl.
It’s amazing how much technology hasn’t changed over the years. Roman gold earrings.
A wig made of hair cap moss. Apparently it keeps off the midges – an important asset anywhere near the Scottish Border.
Rope!
One of the Vindolanda tablets with its translation.
The site of the fort.
The main road through the town and the fort. It’s amazing how towns across the Roman Empire all look so similar.

  1. Great photos and thankyou for sharing. I’d love to know where they got the pattern for the eye shields in the replica horse harness. Modern blinkers, as sometimes used on carriage horses and racehorses, only close off one side of the horse’s vision, rather than creating a close pattern all over. Intriguing.
