Robin Hood’s Bay and Scarborough

Again, showing my age, but Robin Hood’s Bay in my childhood smelled of fish with a scattering of tourists. Now it appears to be entirely holiday cottages and the only fishing boats are ornamental. Two of the shops I remember are still going though – the sweet shop (founded 1928) and the fudge shop (founded 1935). Amazing how some things are mainly memorable because of the food.

Lanes and holiday cottages.
The beach at low tide.
Based in the Oddfellows Hall.
View towards Ravenscar.
More holiday cottages.
The beck.

Scarborough, by contrast, has been a holiday resort since the 17C when the spa opened. It has a mediaeval castle, an enormous Victorian hotel and a funicular railway. And beaches and ice cream.

Scarborough south beach showing the castle on the headland and the hotel on the left. This is the old town – the main Victorian resort and modern town centre are over the headland.
The Spa. Entertainment since the mid 19C.
And finally – sunset over Whitby from my cottage.

  1. Well once again you’ve beaten us to a place by about a week!! We’re going up in just over a week and staying in Filey so we can “do” Scarborough, Robin Hoods Bay (the in-laws honeymooned there 75 years ago) and a few other places. Nothing too strenuous just a few days away. Sounds like you’ve had a good time.

  2. Fab 🌇! Enjoy the rest of your trip, looks beautiful up there. My father’s family are from Scarborough. There is a bench dedicated to Jack Creaser and his heroism during a rescue at sea. We plan to visit one day….. xx
