Herefordshire

(And Shropshire)

Today we visited Ludlow. This is a fabulous town full of old houses and a wonderful castle. Unfortunately the castle was out of bounds as they had Madness on the night before so the gate was full of people brandishing bags of rubbish, piles of chairs and the odd generator. Walking round the fortifications, we were surrounded by wafts of feather boa, presumably sent there by the power of baggy trousers.

This is St Lawrence’s church, very interesting and historical, also home to a cafe, bookshop and very jolly volunteers.

Some views of the centre of town.

Dickensian shop.
Mediaeval half timbered pub.
View of the market place from the front of the castle.

  1. That is a very striking church, I love the carving of the chap tapping a cask of ale and the screen behind the altar is magnificent.

The town looks suitably picturesque – I wonder what Dickens would have thought knowing that in years to come his name would immediately conjure up a style of architecture – it always makes me think of Christmas cards with pictures of stagecoaches in snowy landscapes.

Thanks for taking us along on the journey.
