Byron Bay

Well, I finally met some other people at the hotel this morning. Suggested it might be the zombie apocalypse and we were the only three left alive. Shame all of us were past breeding age. Went out for breakfast with them – did not realise that Australians penchant for abbreviations means that ‘eggs benny’ is actually eggs Benedict.

As I missed the tourist routes off the motorway yesterday, I decided to (accidentally) create one for myself. The lack of 5G means that the sat nav wasn’t working when I left Bangalow so I took the wrong road and disappeared off into the country. It was winding and narrow enough that I’d probably done 20 miles before I found somewhere to turn round. Luckily the sat nav kicked in as I got back to town.

Here I am in Byron Bay. I was hoping to go whale watching but it turns out they don’t do it from here. I have been entertained with stories of whale sightings all the way up the coast. They migrate from Antarctica to the Great Barrier Reef at this time of year up the east coast of Oz.

Byron Bay appears to be one large shopping mall specialising in beach clothes, surfing stuff and hippy tat. There’s obviously money around – shops specialising in neutral linen – but it’s not exciting. I did meet another Papillon so we had an owners meeting about how they ruled our lives etc etc.

An all white jewellery shop.
Byron Bay beach.
Byron Point lighthouse. The most easterly point on the Australian mainland. Next stop……..possibly Norfolk Island but it’s very small and you might overshoot. Otherwise, presumably, Chile.
I saw dolphins out there and there were probably whales – saw blowing from blowholes and the odd fin.
Wallaby with joey. She didn’t seem to be fazed by a group of tourists taking her picture.

Back at the hotel I discover that there is WiFi, just not the one they said……. 🙁

And it is now raining. Just dinner to go today so I shall publish this and go and have a nap. Laters…….

  1. I can almost smell the salt air, lovely, although it’s a shame about the whale watching. Looking at that wallaby and joey, she must have been so relieved when it became big enough to have its feet sticking out front…
