In the suburbs of Detroit.

First day – collected from the airport and fell asleep at 8pm. Wide awake to 3 am. I must be getting old. I used to be better at the jet lag coming this way.

My friend Sherry lives in an extended 1940s family house, part of the extension of the suburbs during and after the Second World War. She has three dogs and an extensive garden. On Saturday we went shopping. I had forgotten how much space suburban America requires. Every shop is surrounded by a massive car park, most of them are too far apart to walk between and there is no public transport.

American culture at its finest. Remembering that it is only the 7th September.

The supermarket we went to is vast – selling most things one could possibly need/eat and a few one wouldn’t consider.

In the afternoon we went over to my friends Kurt and Janet for dinner. Amazing how you can just pick up after years and years away.

  1. Aah, grocery stores. In D.C. I almost caused a traffic pile-up because I was walking on the pavement, from Kate’s condo to the local supermarket, when a lad in a delivery truck spotted me and slammed his brakes on. In rural Illinois, no pavements, concerned citizens stopped to offer me lifts, sure I’d broken down somewhere…and a 24-hour market was chilly heaven at 3am when you’d been paid very late and had run out of everything. Happy Days.
