And, finally, a journey resumes

Although, the continuing battle between the rise in Covid variants and numbers of infections and vaccinations may not mean we are as secure as we would like to be. Watch this space.

My last post was many months ago, after the first lockdown in the UK but before the second and third. Since then, I have moved house and the UK has irrevocably left the European Union. The former is going quite well …..

I have not written anything because it is impossible to construct a lively travel blog when ‘travel’ consists of going to the supermarket once a week. However things are reopening and it is possible to go on the odd day out, even if foreign travel continues to be off the menu.

Two springs in the countryside have led to an observation of plants and flowers that I have not had time to do since my mother used to take me on daily walks when I was a toddler.

Daffodil
Wild strawberry
Rhododendron

More recently I have managed to visit Stourhead – Georgian house and magnificent garden owned by the National Trust.

And Bath, mainly in the rain.

“The first veiw [sic] of Bath in fine weather does not answer my expectations; I think I see more distinctly thro’ Rain.–The Sun was got behind everything, and the appearance of the place from the top of Kingsdown, was all vapour, shadow, smoke & confusion.”

Jane Austen, letter to her sister.

The Pulteney Bridge. This, I was interested to find out, was built to allow access to the Pulteney estate on the other side of the river. This allowed them to develop the land. Speculative developers don’t tend to be so tasteful these days.
The Roman Bath. As hot, mineral rich water comes out of the ground here, it has been a centre for both worship and bathing (the clue’s in the name) for centuries. Before this was built, there was a cult centre on this site.
Minerva
The Roman drain, taking the surplus water to the river. The colour comes from the iron in it.

I hope that I will be able to continue this blog and perhaps go further afield. You never know!

  1. Gorgeous photos – I particularly like the wild strawberry and Minerva…and of course the gardens. I hope that your own garden is starting to show its colours.
